Cost Basis

I am having difficulty finding the correct cost basis for my BA holdings.
I previously had 30 shares of BA at a total cost basis of $7,950 or $265 / share.
Then I TransferIn additional 20 shares at a total cost of $6,817 or $340.85 / share.
The program calculates a total cost basis for the 50 shares of $14,767. That number would be the weighted average cost.
But my brokerage statement tells me $10,519
I tried to put various numbers in the CostBasisOverride column but can not come up with the correct value.
Is there a systematic way to find the specific value for the CostBasisOverride column (or some other input) that will give me the correct result (e.g. $10,519)?

I am having the issue also with other stocks whenever I add positions through TransferIn. It seems a lot of trial and error to get to the correct cost basis.
Thanks for the help as always.

  • Based on your description, total cost basis for 30shares you already had was $7950.
So cost basis override value for 20shares that you are transferring in would be $2569:
    ($10519-$7950)=$2569
In such case total cost basis for all 50 shares is 7590+2569=$10519

If your simply want to assign the same cost basis to each share, first you calculate average cost basis per share as per your bank statement:
    10519/50=210.38
Then for 30 shares you use CostBasisOverride value of 30*210.38 = $6311.4
For the 20 shares you would use CostBasisOverride value of 20*210.38 = $4207.6

  • OK; That works. Thanks.
By the way, I am sometimes getting Out of memory errors during refresh.
    I am running Excel 2016 - 32 bit version.
Do you recommend converting Excel to 64 bit version?
Will Portfolio Slicer with 64 bit Excel 2016 still run my 32 bit file?
  • I highly recommend converting to Excel 64bit as I am surprised you can even run it on 32bit.
The same workbook will work on 64bit without any problems.
  • It runs OK (mostly) but refresh is very slow. Will it run faster with 64bit Excel?
  • No, it will not be faster on 64bit, but will not fail refresh when there is not enough memory.
